Begin by looking closely at the exterior

The Fall season is when you should check every nut, bolt and screw that is being used on the outside of your home. These often overlooked areas can cause problems that are much tougher to solve during the cold of winter. Check out your antenna, satellite dish, mailbox, gutter screws and anything else held together around your exterior with things that can be tightened.

Get your chimney ready to roll

Nobody wants to re-install flashing up on the roof during the dead of winter so get it over with. Take a close look at it and check to make sure you have all your chimney needs settled. Check for cracks and areas that need to be secured. While you are on the roof, go ahead and inspect the roof as well. Are there problem areas you will need to address? Get organized now to plan the solutions.

Get those leaves out and make sure you check to be sure the water will drain all the way through. Look for areas that are clogged and run the water from a hose through to be certain. The last thing you want is damaged gutters during the cold season. Clean them out carefully and make sure you have a spotter in place.

Put away the exterior furniture

Unless you have all weather furniture, you should really take the time to clean it really well and store it for the cold season. Some folks like to keep it outside all year and if your weather allows, so be it. Otherwise, put it in a safe place. Don’t forget to drain your faucets completely and turn them off to prevent freezing.

Rake or blow the leaves regularly

If you stay on top of this, Fall is really not all that hard. Gathering the leaves can be a fun, family affair. Have everyone join in the fun and spend time raking them up. A fun game at the end of the work will make it worthwhile for everyone.
