Bathroom Remodel Tub to Shower Project

Have you ever wanted to try a bathroom remodel tub to shower project?  I wanted something very different from my boring builders grade bathroom.  I tried many times to dress it up with decorative shower curtains and pretty rugs but I finally decided I wanted a bold new look.

Check out our before bathroom photo.  B-O-R-I-N-G!  That white tile has got to go!

Now with a few trips to our local hardware store we found the perfect color of tile.  I love a natural and neutral color.  I wanted just a hint of natural light so I grabbed some privacy blocks.  These made beautiful windows placed high enough to give an amazing amount of light and blurred enough to give all the privacy we need.  This option saved us tons of money because those custom window sizes are crazy expensive!

The decorative border tile pieces were a bit pricey but since the space was so small it was a must have for this project.  It added just the right extra touch I was looking for.  We opted to remove the bathtub all together because we also have a huge garden tub in the master bathroom.  I never want a shower curtain again so I also grabbed a very nice shower door to complete my new look.

Check out how amazing the finished project looks!  WOW!  What a difference!

The planning didn’t stop there though.  If you shave your legs in the shower you know how absolutely frustrating it can be to try and shave with no place to put your leg or better yet no place to sit.  Look at this!  A built in seat!!!

Last but certainly not least, we also wanted a place to hide our shampoos and conditioners so we opted to a built in nook too!  Clever right?!!  I thought so!  I turned out amazing!!!  I am so very glad to have completed this project!

Redecorate a Teens Bedroom with Paint!  Frugal Decorating Tips!

Here’s an idea to redecorate a teens bedroom with paint!  One of the best ways to save money on redecorating is to use paint.  Paint can give the same space a whole new feel for just under $50!

My daughter loves dragons!  She’s obsessed with them!  She enjoys an Oriental twist.  So of course red and black where definitely the colors to fit here taste.  We added a cherry blossom tree branch that extended across three walls of her room.  The cherry blossoms were really easy to paint too.  It’s basically a little star almost with a little detail in the center of it.  We then added a huge red border with a thin black line border underneath.

We also added a set of three Chinese Paper lanterns.  You can find these at IKEA or even here on Amazon.  Here’s a whole bunch of different Chinese paper lanterns to choose from on Amazon.

We ended up finding our curtains at our local Walmart but if you have colors that are hard to find you may want to check out the curtains at Amazon because the selection is much bigger!  Target would also be an option but I’ve found they have a very limited selection of curtains and the sizes we needed were always out.

Adding the black and red curtains really tied this look together.  Lastly we threw in a black comforter set and she is good to go!  I am very happy with the comforter we chose because it was inexpensive and the quality is pretty good.  It’s the Shavel Home Products Microfiber Comforter Mini Set, Black/Grey, Twin Extra Long here at only $29.99!  What a bargain!

We started off with a design in mind after looking at all the designs she likes we kind of combined them and made our own.  We ended up using a pencil and a level to draw our design before we started painting.

I think it came out nicely and my daughter is beyond ecstatic!

RePurpose Old Stuffed Animals Craft Project

If you have children I just know you have stuffed animals.  You probably have a few that you want to get rid of too.  Why not try the repurpose old stuffed animals craft project idea!  I’m not a big fan of stuffed animals.  I’ve never been a fan actually.  They collect a lot of dirt and germs so I am constantly washing them.  Needless to say I was very happy when my daughter announced that she no longer is “in to” Spongebob!   Buh-bye Spongebob!!!!

Normally if the toy is still good I would have donated it but Spongebob had been put threw the ringer!  I doubt anyone would want that worn out stuffed animal.  Instead we decided to not let all that stuffing do to waste and we created something new!

We decided to look at the remnants  at the fabric store to see what we could make.  We went to the fabric store thinking I would teach her how to make a pillow because that would have been a perfect beginners project for my little one but she had another idea.  She is a true animal lover of all sorts.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a real live animal or a stuffed animal.  She treats them all with love.  She decided her wolf stuffed animals needed a new comfy bed to sleep in and they also needed a leash.  Man, this girl keeps me busy but I love it!

We found a cheap piece of fleece dog print remnant i the bargain bin!  Yay!  Perfect!  We also purchased some dog print ribbon and a hook for the colors and leash.  Easy project ahead!

Here’s what we needed for our project pet bed project:

• Sewing Machine (or needle and thread to hand sew it)
• Thread
• Material (about 1.5 yards)
• Stuffing (we used from old stuffed animals)
• sewing pins

For the Leash we needed:

• Dog Print Ribbon
• Hook for the leash (I used this Swivel Eye Snap Hook)

Directions for the Pet Bed Project:

First things first!  We washed all the stuffed animals we planned to repurpose.

Next we cut our material.  The way you cut it will depend on how much material you have to work with and how big you want your bed to be.

We ended up cutting two long strips equal in size to make the outer ring of the pet bed.  This length determined the size of the inner bed pillow.  After we cut the long strips of material (about 4 inches wide) we laid it out in a circle so we could determine the size of the circle that needed to be cut.  We ended up cutting the circle about 1 inch bigger to allow for the sewing.  When we cut the circle we folded the material so each circle would be exactly the same size.

Here’s a photo to give you an idea of how we cut it:

Next, she cut up Spongebob to get the stuffing out.  She loved this part!

Next I started sewing.  I took the two long strips of material and began to sew a straight line.  The fleece material I used didn’t have a right or wrong side.  Both sides were the same color.  When I was done it looked like a really long sleeve to a shirt with both sides left open.   Finally I had her stuff it.  (Poor thing was sick home sick with strep throat during this photo.  She insisted on doing a craft)

Next I stitched the pillow part.  I placed both circles together and began sewing it but leaving about 4 inches open.  Just enough for her to stuff the pillow.  After she stuffed it I continued to sew it all the way closed.  (Don’t worry about turning the material inside out to hide the stitched hem.  You need this hem out.

Next I used the sewing pins and pinned together the outer hem line from the sleeve and the outer hem line from the pillow all the way around.  When I got to the opening of the sleeves I put one inside the other and pinned those together too.  We ended up hand sewing those two hems together all the way around the bottom of the pet bed.  Once we got the the end of it we did a simple hand sewn stitch on the sleeve to tie it all together.

Lastly we made the leashes out of that super cute Dog Print Ribbon!  Boy those were super easy too!  We measured out how long we want the leash to be allowing for extra for the handle.  We folded over just the right amount for the handle and did one simple stitch.  Then we took the laced the swivel snap hook and did another stitch there too.

Voila!  Project complete with one happy (but sick) child!

And LOOK who got a bit jealous (even though he has his own doggie bed!)    So we are off to the store to buy more material so he can have a new one too….  Oh geez…

Rhubarb Crumb Cake with Vanilla Sauce

I’m about to give you a really good recipe for Rhubarb Crumb Cake with Vanilla Sauce!  If you enjoy crumb cakes then I have a feeling you like really enjoy this one.  This cake is not too overly sweet at all.  It has a hint of bitterness from the rhubarb moist cake mixed with a sweet crunch of the crumb topping and drizzled with a vanilla buttery sweetness from the vanilla sauce!  When you take a bit of this Rhubarb Crumb Cake with Vanilla Sauce it’s a perfect blend of  all the different textures and flavors all in one!  That’s the best way I can describe this cake.

Rhubarb Crumb Cake served with a buttery Vanilla Sauce!

Serves: 9

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons butter, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 egg
• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute 1 cup regular milk with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice)
• 2 cups chopped fresh rhubarb
• CRUMB TOPPING:
• ¼ cup all-purpose flour
• ¼ cup sugar
• 2 tablespoons butter, melted
• VANILLA SAUCE:
• ½ cup butter, cubed
• ¾ cup sugar
• ½ cup evaporated milk (I’ve substituted regular milk before and it came out just fine)
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

1. RHUBARB CAKE:
2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together. Beat
3. in egg. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; add to
4. creamed mixture and slowly mix in the buttermilk, beating just until
5. moistened. Fold in the rhubarb. Pour into a greased 9-in. square
6. baking dish.
7. CRUMB TOPPING:
8. Combine topping ingredients; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350°
9. for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool on a
10. wire rack.
11. VANILLA SAUCE:
12. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add sugar and milk. Bring to a
13. boil; cook and stir for 2-3 minutes or until thickened. Remove from
14. the heat; stir in vanilla. Serve with cake.
15. Enjoy!

Best Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe

There’s nothing quite like the taste of the best homemade whipped cream!  Here’s a recipe that is super easy to do and it’s fast too!  You can whip this up in less than 5 minutes!  You will never want to buy the store bought stuff every again once you’ve tried the best homemade whipped cream recipe!

Ingredients:

• 1 cup Heavy Cream (cold)
• 2 tablespoons of Sugar (or Powdered Sugar)

Double the recipe for big batches

• 2 cups Heavy Cream (cold)
• 4 tablespoons of Sugar (or Powdered Sugar)

Optional:  Add 1/2 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla (use the clear vanilla for white color)  I love the taste of vanilla so this is not optional for me!

Directions for the Best Homemade Whipped Cream:

1. I usually put my mixer bowl and whisk attachment in the refrigerator to get it cold before I start but this is not necessary.
2. Add all the ingredients in a mixer.
3. Start on a low speed to incorporate all the ingredients together then whip on high until you have peaks.
4. Keep checking the stiffness of your whipped cream because you can get it to different levels.  Voila!  That’s it!

Note:  Stop at soft peeks if you are using it for just a topping of a dessert.   Make it a stiffer if you are going to use it on a cake.  I used a really stiff whipped cream for my No Bake Watermelon Cake Recipe seen here.

This whole process takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish to make!  Easy and delicious!  I bet you NEVER buy store bought whipped cream again.

Tips:

Some people can use the small recipe in a magic bullet or even use a hand blender too.  If you use the hand blender just make sure your cup or bowl is big enough so it doesn’t splash all over the place.

If you are in a hurry, I suggest using powdered sugar.  It dissolves faster.

If you want to make it ahead of time:  Refrigerate overnight with a plastic cover.  If the cream separates just add it to the mixer to whip it together again.

How about a Whipped Cream Frosting Recipe?!!!

There’s only one extra step to the recipe above to make a stabilized whipped cream frosting recipe.  All you need is Wilton’s Piping Gel.  Yup!  That’s it.  And…  I am happy to report my whipped cream frosting recipe held up at room temperature for an hour and a half!  After the party I put the cake back in the refrigerator.

Ingredients for Whipped Cream Frosting:

• 1/2 pint (1 cup) heavy whipping cream
• 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar (I like it a bit sweeter so I used 4 tablespoons of sugar)
• 2 tablespoons Piping Gel
• 1/2 teaspoon clear vanilla extract

Directions for Whipped Cream Frosting:

Whipped Cream frosting takes a bit longer to make but it’s delicious, light and worth the extra effort!  The gelatin stiffens the whipped cream and makes the texture fuller and firm which holds up nicely on pies and cakes.  Very professional end result!

Cracked Heel Remedy

I just tried an amazing cracked heel remedy you can do at home for a fraction of the cost of a pedicure!  Now I’m not saying not to ever get a mani or pedi but those are a treat for me.  My budget just doesn’t allow for me to go all the time.

I am so excited to tell you that I have actually tried something that really works!  It really, really WORKS!

You will need about 35 minutes to sit and soak your feet.  The kids cannot disrupt this process!  (teehee)  And…  I usually do this at night so my feet can stay in socks overnight to seal in the moisture.

This is the only cracked heel remedy I’ve ever tried at home that really works with very little effort.  I’m amazed at how the hydrogen peroxide just melts away the dead tissue.  It’s amazing!

I will also mention that it’s NOT easy taking photos of your own heels.  Here’s a great before and after photo:

Here’s what you need:

2 cups Hydrogen Peroxide

2 cups of hot water (as hot as you can take it)

Foot file or pumas stone (this Foot File I found on Amazon is my favorite)

Lotion (any kind will do)

Socks

Here’s what you do:

Combine 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide and 2 cups of hot water in a foot soak.  Sit for a full 30 minutes with your heels completely immersed in the solution.

Completely dry your feet and immediately use the foot file or pumas stone to removed the dead skin.  This is an easy process and only takes about a minute or two for each foot (depending on your condition).

Note:  The photos I took of my heels above were right after this process!  Immediately they are nice and smooth!

Finish by applying lotion to your foot.

Cover with socks overnight to seal in the moisture.

Voila!  You are ready for the summer and all the cute shoes too!  Wait!  Don’t forget some cute Nail Designs for those polished tootsies!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe

Have you ever tried a Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe?    Try this delicious Chocolate Covered Strawberries!  They are super simple to make and can be ready in about 15 to 20 minutes!  These are super fun to make in the summer time too!  Yum!

Holding the strawberry by the stem, dip the fruit into the dark chocolate, lift and twist slightly, letting any excess chocolate fall back into the bowl.

Optional:  Dip them in Nuts, Sprinkles or small chocolate chips.

Set strawberries on the parchment paper.

Repeat with the rest of the strawberries.

Finally, dip a fork in the white chocolate and drizzle the white chocolate over the dipped strawberries.Allow about 30 minutes for the chocolate to set and then enjoy!

Refrigerate the left overs.

Shrimp & Avocado Salad Recipe

This Shrimp & Avocado Salad Recipe is one of my favorite cold salad recipes ever.  It’s really easy to make and everyone who tries it must have the recipe!

This salad is served cold so it makes a really good appetizer idea for you gatherings and parties!  It’s so filling that I actually have it as a whole meal.  Serve it with Corn Chips or Pita Chips and you have a real treat.

This would make a nice recipe for left over shrimp (boy, that never happens in my house).  Or you can purchase the shrimp already cooked and peeled in the freezer section of your local grocery store.  We ended up using the tomatoes, green onions, cilantro and jalapenos from our Raised Garden bed we told you about earlier.  Ah, fresh ingredients is absolutely delicious!

I normally don’t have cocktail sauce on hand and usually just whip some up when I need some.  The cocktail sauce I make consists of Ketchup, Horseradish and a squeeze of fresh lemon.  If you want to try and make your own just add a little bit of horseradish at a time until you get the taste you want.  Some like it spicier than others.

Here’s a really good tip for dicing an avocado.  Start by cutting the avocado in half and remove the seed.  Then use a knife to dice the avocado while it’s still in the peel.  (see photo below)  Then use a spoon to remove the diced avocado.  Works great every time!

This Shrimp & Avocado Salad recipe is served cold. It will only last about 1 day in the refrigerator because of the avocado. If you need to make this in advance just add the avocado in the day you plan to serve it.

Serves: 1 or 2

Ingredients

• 1 Cup of Cooked and Peeled Shrimp (small size)
• Fresh squeezed Lemon Juice
• 1 Avocado diced
• ½ cup of Cocktail Sauce
• 1 Diced Jalapeno (without the seeds if you like it mild or with the seeds if you prefer the heat)
• ¼ cup diced Tomatoes
• ⅛ cup diced Red Onions
• ⅛ cup diced Green Onions (Scallions)
• ⅛ cup Chopped Cilantro
• Corn Chips

Instructions

1. First, I start by dicing all of my vegetable ingredients.
2. There is a trick to dicing the Avocado. Slice it in half and remove the seed. Use a knife and diced it while it’s still in the peel. Then use a spoon to scoop it out. (see ingredients photo)
3. Use small shrimp that has already been cooked and peeled. (they sell shrimp this way too)
4. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir.
5. Note: I like to make my own cocktail sauce by using ketchup, horseradish sauce and a squeeze of lemon. Use the horseradish sauce to taste. Some like it spicier than others.
6. Serve cold with Corn or Pita Chips and enjoy!

Seasoned Crackers recipe

Boy, if you are ever in a pinch for a party snack, this recipe is for you!  It’s delicious with a capitol “D!”  You will laugh at how easy it is too!

Ingredients:

1 box generic crackers (no salt or low salt would work best)

1/4 cup of your favorite seasonings.  (Here’s where you can get creative!  Parmesean cheese and Dill, Crushed red pepper, Season all, packet of ranch dressing, sea salt etc…  I used Season-all and everyone loved it!)

3/4 cup olive oil

Method:

Put 3 to 4 sleeves of cracker into a large size lock baggie.  Add the Olive oil and seasonings then shake!  Voila!

See…  I told you that you would laugh at how easy that was!  I used to purchase Cheez-its or Nips but these are even better because I can make any flavor I want!

Teen Birthday Party Idea Mall Scavenger Hunt

Have you ever tried to plan a Teen Birthday party?  Try a teen birthday party idea mall scavenger hunt!

It’s not the easiest thing in the world to do when you are planning a teenagers birthday party.  They can be so darn picky!  There are a few things that most teenagers like.  The mall.  Cake.  Games.   So there we have it.  We decided on a Mall Scavenger Hunt for our teen’s birthday party.  And guess what?!  It was a huge success!

First things first.  I had to call the mall to make sure this was okay with all the rules at the mall.  My teen also likes Anime so she decided they would have this party in their Anime Costumes too.  Oh the attention they got!  Teens LOVE attention!  Not all party guests dress up but most of them did.  There were a few mall rules with costumes though.  First, no weapons (not even play weapons).  Second, no face masks either.  Not a problem.

Did I mention these kids are nuts?!!!  Here’s a photo they took in GNC!

We headed to the mall about 30 minutes prior to the party for set up.  We made a customized iPhone cake for the birthday girl!  Notice the iphone has the date of the 24th with a 6:00 time.  That was the date and time of her party.  Notice also that she has 16 messages.  This is her 16th Birthday party!  Everyone LOVED the cake especially the birthday girl!

Now for the Scavenger Hunt! We decided on a few prizes to get a little competition going!  We decided to have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize category.  First prize was a $25 gift card to the mall!  Second and third prizes were goodie bags with games and such in them.  These teens LOVED IT!

We gave each teenager a list they had to complete and we sent them off free into the mall to complete their lists!  Here’s the best part:  The parents got to stay in the food court and chat while all those teens were running around like crazy!  Best. Time. EVER!

It was about 40 minutes later we had our first confirmed winner!

Ingredients

• 4 tbsp. flour
• 4 tbsp. sugar
• 2 tbsp. cocoa
• 1 egg
• 3 tbsp. milk
• 3 tbsp. oil
• A small splash of vanilla extract
• 1 large coffee mug
• 3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

1. Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.
2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
4. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
5. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high).
6. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and turn it over onto a plate if desired.

Homemade Sorbet Recipe: Watermelon

Our Strawberry Sorbet turned out so delicious that we wanted to attempt our Homemade Sorbet Recipe with watermelon too! This one was YUMMY!! It’s a very simple recipe that your kids can help with and only has 8 ingredients!

Homemade Sorbet Recipe: Watermelon

Recipe type: Dessert/ Healthy Snack

Serves: 6

Ingredients

• 3 cups of watermelon cut up
• 1 small, ripe banana broken into pieces
• ½ cup unsweetened fruit juice (I used grape)
• ½ cup lemon juice
• ½ cup light corn syrup
• 2 tablespoons of sugar
• ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon (optional) – I prefer it without
• a pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Place all of the ingredients into a food processor and blend until smooth. I just threw everything into my blender!
2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with wax or parchment paper so that it hangs over the sides.
3. Pour your mixture onto the baking sheet and spread out evenly with a spatula. My mixture was liquid, so no need to use a spatula.
4. Place the baking sheet into the freezer (it needs to sit flat so it doesn’t spill) and freeze mixture until firm, about 2 hours. The mixture will be firm, but not solid like ice.
5. Break up the frozen pieces and blend them together in a food processor to form a smooth sorbet. I found it easier to break it up and mix it together in a bowl with a wooden spoon.
6. Serve immediately.

Notes

If there is any left over, you can freeze it. Just let it thaw for a few minutes when you are ready for more!
