7 Tips to Organize Your Schedule Like a Pro

When people go to organize their schedules, they often try to wing it and figure it out as they go. Organizing takes……well….organization! You have to go about it in a reasonable, controlled and logical fashion to really get your schedule under control. This is especially true of very busy people. Fortunately, it is not all that difficult to do once you have a plan in place. Before long you can organize your schedule like a pro and find yourself with that thing you forgot existed….spare time.

Here are 7 quick and easy tips to get started:

Invest in a good planner or program

Without a doubt, organizing your schedule begins and ends with a good planner. You can get a handwritten one or a computerized program, but you need to make sure you get a good one. Planners are the cornerstone to good scheduling and having a central location for your information is priceless. Spend the money and get a decent one to get off on the right foot.

Truly commit to scheduling

Scheduling your life takes extreme discipline and even more commitment to stick to it at first. Over time it will be natural and actually become difficult to not do. You just have to commit to making the change and hanging in there until it is habit.

Keep a pocket memo pad on hand at all times

This little note keeper will help you to add things to the schedule, make notes and stay organized when you are not near your schedule. Get in the habit of writing everything down. At the end of the day you can make additions to your schedule or take care of the things you wrote down. Having this quick note reference is wonderful when you are apt to forget things.

Attack the toughest jobs early

Many people advise to start with something easy but that is counterproductive. Most people start with energy and tend to slowly lose steam throughout the day. Imagine that you are nearing the end of your busy day and you have something easy to finish it off. Now imagine you have something tough. Which one are you more likely to push off to the next day? Get the hard stuff done early.

Break things down into small bites

Quick and easy bites are much more efficient and easy to attack than large jobs. Take the bigger jobs and break them down into reasonable steps. This will help you to improve your accuracy on the schedule as well.

Assign times to everything

Once you have the tasks narrowed into smaller bites, assign everything a time. If you don’t do this, you will eventually leave too much or too little time between jobs and your schedule will fall apart. Instead, assign a time to everything. Organize your schedule by being precise and making great use of your time throughout the day.

Remember to schedule breaks as well

Whether you work for yourself, are a stay at home parent or simply have a typical nine to five job, breaks are important as the day goes along. If you don’t schedule these things too, you will end up awarding yourself too many or none at all. This part of your day needs to be organized too so that you stay on track. When you organize your schedule, your breaks should be as important as anything else.
