5 Tips to Organize Your Sentimental Items

When you organize your sentimental items, most people simply stow them away in a drawer or closet, only to be pulled out on special occasions. While this is certainly a legitimate way to do it, others like to actually enjoy them more often. Whether you like to keep them privately tucked away or displayed out in the open, here are some ideas to help you get them organized and neat.

Use a hat box

Hat boxes are ideal for storing sentimental items and will generally hold all the stuff you would ever need. Unless you hold onto everything, most regular sized hat boxes will contain your items nicely without squishing or pressing them. Hat boxes also can be displayed rather nicely giving you a choice between tucking it away or putting it on display in your room.

Organize them by type

Sentimental items come in all shapes and sizes and what is important to one person might be silly to another. Because of this wide range of types, it is important to organize them by what they are. Keep all the letters in one spot and all the ticket stubs together. This will help you to quickly find what you are looking for when you need to. Other people prefer to organize them by year. Whatever method you use, being able to find what you want is important and organizing it in this way will help you do just that.

Consider a scrap book

Scrap books are awesome because it is self contained. You can put everything in it and go to one easy place to find all your memories. Some even scan these things and do a digital scrapbook online. This is a fun and exciting new way of building memories that will be forever preserved. Old fashioned scrap books will be treasured as well.

Laminate older items

As items like letters age, they become brittle and fall apart. Consider laminating the items that are easy to do. This will keep them around for much longer. Be careful to not laminate items that have monetary value such as Presidential papers or antique letters as they would lose their value entirely.

Consider a shadow box sentimental collage

One of my favorite ideas is to put sentimental items into a collage and place them in a shadowbox frame to hang on the wall. This is kind of like celebrating your memories every day with everyone and reminding you of where you came from. This is not easy to do with all items, but many work fantastic. Mix and match to see what works and you might be surprised at the possibilities.
