Thinking about “ditching” your home phone service?

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been doing a lot of research on just that (ditching my home phone service).  Now-a-days it seems as though we live by our cell phones.  I have been on a mission to save money and make use out of the technology we already have in our homes without monthly expenses!

I did cancel my phone service and I am still in between whether or not I even want a phone in my house.  If I have to pay another monthly charge then the answer is NO!

But…  I have found a device called the Obihai OBi1o0 that runs for about $50 on Amazon.  Apparently it’s the size of a pack of cigarettes and it uses your internet router to stream the signal throughout your house.  This means that an OBI1oo owner is able to make completely free outgoing and incoming calls over his or her Internet connection.   You must have a service that streams the connection and I have found “Google Voice” to be amazing and FREE.  I already use Google voice when I am on my computer (especially when I am too lazy to get up and get my cell phone).

Things you need to do this:

Internet connection, Router, OBI100 and sign up for Google Voice on Google.

Assuming you already have an internet connection/router setup, you still need two things:  The OBI100 ($50 on Amazon) and sign up for a gmail account (free).

PRO’s:

  • No more monthly service fee (unless Google decides to charge for Google Voice in the future) Unlimited FREE phone usage but not free international calling.
  • The reviews show the signal to be pretty strong.

CON’s

  • $50 to purchase the OBI100 via Amazon (that’s the cheapest I’ve found online)
  • No 911 Service (you don’t get this with the cell phone either though.  Tip:  I was able to search the internet for a free emergency notification system for cellular telephone users in my area so you may want to search for one in your area too.  If you live in Texas (specifically Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Llano, Travis, and Williamson Counties you can sign up with CAPCOG here)

I would love to here opinions you have.  I would also love to hear if you are already doing this.

Happy Shopping iSavers!
