How to Make Roasted Turnips to Taste Like Hash Browns

If you are doing the keto diet like me, there’s probably a really good chance you miss potatoes. If you do, I would highly encourage you to try radishes or turnips in place of potatoes!

I can’t decide which I like better honestly. I really like radishes because they are easy to slice up and fry on the stove top for a quick keto side dish. I really like the taste of turnips though. They have that same creamy, buttery taste just like a potato when they are roasted.

I’ve made this recipe two different ways. It can be cooked in the air fryer at 400 degrees in 12 minutes or you can roast them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. Both are great but I much rather prefer the oven to roast these turnips because I can make a bigger batch at one time. Both taste great!

Here’s the other thing about this recipe. If you roast these turnips in the oven, you can easily make this a sheet pan breakfast idea by adding eggs to the dish after the turnips have roasted! I hate doing dishes so I don’t mind adding a few sunnyside up eggs to the sheet pan. You cook the turnips as instructed below. Once the turnips are done cooking you simply make a hole and crack an egg on the sheet pan and pop it back in the oven for another 10 minutes so they eggs cook perfectly. I usually sprinkle the eggs with a bit of salt and pepper too.

You can make these roasted turnips into spicy keto hash browns or just flavorful keto hash browns by changing up the spices. I made some super spicy keto hash browns by adding smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Tabasco sauce! Wowee was it spicy! It had excellent flavor too! If you prefer a less spicy dish, you can simply add rosemary, salt, pepper and a bit of garlic powder for a wonderful dish.

Roasted Turnips Hash Browns Ingredients

Spicy Roasted Turnips
3 medium-size turnips
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp smoked paprika (you can substitute this for chili powder)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp salt
Optional: 1 tsp Tabasco sauce

Non-Spicy Roasted Turnips
3 medium-size turnips
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp Rosemary
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp salt

Mix the turnips in the bowl until they are evenly coated with oil.
Sprinkle the seasonings over the coated turnips.
Mix the turnips until all the seasonings have fully combined evenly.
Place the turnips in the bottom of the air fryer (not overlapping) and cook them on 400 degrees for 12 minutes. Be sure to flip them halfway through that time. I had to do two separate batches when using 3 turnips.
