Pressure Cooker Lobster Tails

I splurge Y’all!  I made some tasty Pressure Cooker Lobster Tails with Butter Sauce! A lobster tail in instant pot is truly the easiest method I have tried.

I was shopping at Costco this past week and ran across their seafood section in the freezer area.  I don’t normally shop that part of the store but I was looking for party foods.  I came across the largest king crab legs I have ever seen in my whole life!  Those babies were huge!  They were crazy expensive too.

I wanna say a huge package was a little over $200.  Next to these humongous crab legs, was a box of 5-pound box of lobster tails for $99!  WHOA!  The weird thing is that I couldn’t see inside of this white box to see how many lobster tails make up 5 pounds.

Pressure Cooker Lobster

After much thought about making some delicious lobster tails at home, I decided to purchase this box.  I normally don’t go overboard and spend quite that much on food but I ended up talking myself into buying it because it would have cost way more than that to take my large family out to dinner just once if we all ordered lobster.

I got home and immediately opened the box and there were 18 lobster tails in there!  WOW!

I have never in my life made lobster tails in a pressure cooker before and believe me when I tell you I was really scared they wouldn’t come out.  I was afraid I would overcook them and then they would taste rubbery.  I was afraid to make a mistake cooking this expensive meal.

Steamed Lobster Tails

Here’s the other thing.  They come in the box frozen.  I decided to test cook them in my 6 quart Instant Pot Duo model pressure cooker from frozen.  I set all fear aside and went for it! I thought why not try steamed lobster tails!

Use Your Steamer Basket When Steaming Lobster Tails

I cooked them on manual pressure set on high for exactly 4 minutes.  I had purchased an extra steamer basket that fits in the 6 quart Instant Pot pressure cooker on Amazon a long time ago.

It comes in handy when making big meals.  I really needed that steamer basket because I steamed 8 lobster tails at the same time!  I layered the first trivet with four lobster tails and then I added the basket and put the next four lobster tails right on top of the other ones.  Came out perfect!

Lobster Tails Ingredients

Butter Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon dill weed or cilantro (whichever you prefer)

Pressure Cooker Lobster Tails with Butter Sauce Instructions

  1. Start by prepping the lobster tails for steaming.  Use kitchen shears and cut a line down the inside of each shell.  (I made the mistake of not doing this my first time and the lobsters curl up making them hard to cut when they are hot)
  2. Add one cup of water in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning to the water in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.
  4. Place the trivet in the bottom of the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker on top of the water mixture.
  5. Place 4 lobster tails shell side down.
  6. Next, place the steamer basket on top of the first 4 lobster tails and add the remaining tails on the top of that steamer basket.
  7. Lock the cover and make sure the vent is set to seal.
  8. Now press the manual button and use the plus or minus buttons to adjust the minutes to 4 minutes.  (Note:  I used 4 minutes because the lobster tails were frozen)
  9. It’s important to know that your pressure cooker will take a while to heat up with frozen ingredients in it.  I wanna say mine took about 10 to 15 minutes to heat up and get going.
  10. The timer will switch to say “on” when it is heating up.  Once it’s heated, it will start to count down the minutes from 4 when it is steaming.
  11. When the lobster tails are steaming in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker, this is when I make the butter sauce.
  12. To make the butter sauce, simply place a tablespoon of butter in a frying pan and cooking it for about 3 minutes until it turns brown.  Add the remaining butter and a teaspoon of fresh minced garlic.  Once it has completely melted add the remaining ingredients (lemon juice, pepper, and either cilantro or dill weed seasonings) to the butter mixture.  Mix all the ingredients together and set aside.
  13. Once the pressure cooker beeps telling you the time is up, turn it off and do a quick release of the steam.  Careful not to place your hands on top of the button because that is where the steam comes out and it will burn you.
  14. Once the steam has completely released, then unlock the lid and remove the lobster tails using kitchen tongs.
  15. Serve the lobster tails immediately with the butter sauce.

Pro Note:  I use these same instructions even if I am only making 2 or 4 lobster tails at a time.  The time doesn’t change.  If you are making fresh lobsters that have already thawed, I would only add 3 minutes to the pressure cooker time settings.

Lobster Tails

These lobster tails came out perfectly tender when I steamed them from frozen!  I was completely amazed!  Gosh, I love my Instant Pot Pressure cooker!  The 6-quart model works well for my family of four.

  1. I just used this method for four lobster tails, and they were grea! So much easier than the traditional way. Thank you!!

  2. Can you piggy back the lobster tails first before you steam them. The meat would be already sitting on shell would be easier to get out after done. Or would the lobster cook to fast and be rubbery

  3. If I do 6 lobster tails is it still 4 minutes? Is there a substitute for the seasoning I don’t have that seasoning

I made this seperately to put on my paella, it was excellent. I didn’t make the butter sauce, but I will be making this again to try it out with that too!

Thank you,Jennifer, for this recipe. Going to put those frozen lobster tails in my IP right now! (I have the same IP as you do, and I love it!)

We just cooked 6 lobster tails in our 8qt Instant Pot for your recommended 4 minutes.
They were the BEST lobsters we have enjoyed in a long time. So tasty and perfectly done. My wife rarely has lobster that she likes but these had her stamp of approval. Went in frozen came out perfect.

  7. I tried steaming 1 frozen lobster tail, and 4 minutes just wasn’t enough I got raw lobster tail. Not sure if I did something wrong, but definitely longer than 4 minutes for a frozen tail

    1. Are you using a different pressure cooker than the Instant Pot? I’m wondering if there are different cooking times for different machines.

I had the same problem. The size of tail must be to difference. I used very large tails…put back in for another 2 min and still not cooked in center so put in for another min. An that did the trick. Tastes great! So for 1lb lobster tails you will need to set IP on manual 7

    3. Me too. I had 2 large lobster tails and added an extra minute to the cook time. These instructions must be for small tails. Next time 9-10 minutes for the larger ones. Hate to ruin good food on bad directions.

We liked this recipe. We love Old Bay Seasoning, but we didn’t think it added anything as the flavor didn’t get into the meat.

My lobsters were rock hard frozen and there was no way to cut through the shell. The tails were curled after cooking but it didn’t matter to us. From the pictures, it looks like the tails are thawed a bit so you can cut through the shells. I’ll do the same in the future.

If the lobsters were as frozen as ours were, I would add another minute or two to the cook time. We thought our lobsters were a bit undercooked.

Thanks for sharing this recipe, we’ll definitely be making it again!

    1. I had really hard frozen tails also. I just ran them uner cold water for a minute and was able to cut the shells with sissors. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the recipe!!! I made this exactly like your directions. It turned out perfectly!! I’ve never made lobster before but this recipe ( and the instant pot of course) made it so easy I’ll definitely be doing it again. If recommend this to anyone who wants to make lobster tails. Doesn’t get much easier.
