Things to Do This Summer

Finding things to do that don’t cost us a dime is very important during the summer months. Kids want to stay busy and we want them to have a good time, but the expense of doing so can add up quickly if we don’t get creative.

Here are 15 ideas that will cost you absolutely nothing this summer:

15 Things To Do With Your Kids This Summer That Don’t Cost A Dime

Treasure Hunt

Treasure Hunts are so much fun and they are super easy. Just find or create some “magical” objects and hide them all around your yard to create a fun mystery for your kids. This also can work indoors on a rainy day and adds a sense of adventure in your own yard.

You can take this a step further and create a treasure hunt at the park based on what you know is at your local park. Once the kids find everything on the list, you could offer a prize (aka the treasure) that they get for their outdoor adventures. Bring their best friend or group of friends along for the fun and you are sure to make lifetime memories for the kids to remember for years to come.

Head to the Park

A simple stroll in the park is a ton of fun for the kids and for the whole family too. Find a place that puts your mind at ease and take a walk there every chance you get. Try to go during the late afternoon or early mornings so that the heat is not as bad.

This can be a year-round family fun activity that lets you explore and enjoy some outdoor recreation any time of year.

Play Hide and Seek

This classic game is a classic for a reason….it is a ton of fun! One person hides their eyes while everyone else hides. After a count of ten, the person then goes hunting. If someone is tagged before they get back to a specific spot, they are “it” and the game starts over.

Go Hiking

Hiking is wonderful for exercise but also because it keeps your kids exploring. Working their mental abilities as well as their physical, hiking is a great way to keep the family vibrant and healthy.

Volunteer

There are countless causes in your communities that need your help and your kids will benefit greatly from volunteering. It will teach them a sense of duty and community. Find a great cause and volunteer and you will feel like a million bucks and be helping someone at the same time.

Make Up A New Recipe

Cooking is always fun for kids and you can make it exciting by having a pantry challenge of sorts. Dig in the cabinets and find some ingredients. Then have the kids come up with a new recipe from the ingredients. Gently oversee things so that you don’t end up with something inedible.

Put on a Neighborhood Talent Show

This is a great deal of fun if you have a neighborhood that hangs out together. Gather everyone and organize a talent show. Advertise it weeks in advance and have everyone bring something to make it a full blown cookout/talent show. Not only is this a fun night for kids, it also makes some of the best experiences for them too!

Play A Favorite Sport

Countless sports are absolutely free and wonderful fun. Pick one and give it a shot this summer. When you tire of one, move on to something else. This is a great way to let your kids sample the various sports.

Be sure to check local golf courses, kayaking locations, schools for local sports camps and ask friends for their recommendations.

Make Up A New Song

Why not write a song? You might be shocked at what happens. Perhaps you have the next great songwriters on your hands. After writing the song, host live music concerts for family and friends. Be sure to video it too!

Visit a Local Historic Site

Most historic sites cost absolutely nothing to visit and if you look hard enough, you will find some pretty interesting things. Old homes, museums and even war sites are generally sprinkled all over the place. Look around and see what you can visit this summer.

As your friends for their local favorites, visit the visitors center in your town about destinations that are around the area. Some towns even have an app that gives you a self-guided tour of local attractions.

Go Bike Riding

Why not dust off those bikes that have been in the garage all winter? Get out and pedal your way to free fun!

Help a Neighbor for the Day

Ask around the neighborhood and see if you can assist someone. Perhaps you can mow their lawn, get groceries or simply lend some company to someone that needs it. Kids will embrace this sort of thing if you introduce it early on. Our world needs more of it.

Plant a Tree

There is something special about planting something and letting it grow right before your eyes. If not a tree, perhaps a flower or bush would work. You might even start a garden.

Have a Neighborhood Olympics

Like the talent show above, you can also have a neighborhood Olympics. This is a ton of fun and simply requires you to come up with various “events” that the kids can compete in. Sack races, egg tosses and countless other things work just fine.

Go Swimming

It is summer, right? Find a nice cool spot, such as state parks to swim for free and enjoy the water and sun. Just be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and to follow safety guidelines around the water!
