How to Organize a Linen Closet

Don’t you hate digging through piles and stacks to find clean towels, blankets, sheets, and tablecloths? It’s time to get that linen closet organized so you can find what you need, when you need it. Check out these tips.

Store Like Items Together

Separate all of your items into piles of like items. You will want to designate specific areas in your linen closet for specific items. Use your computer (or your own handwriting if it is neat) to make small labels or signs to put in place on shelves in the closet.

Use Boxes for Organization

Use clear, plastic storage boxes or some other type of decorative boxes to store your linens in and keep them from getting dusty. Make sure your boxes will fit on the shelves of your linen closet then mark each box as you fill them.

Sheets

For sheets, stack a folded flat sheet, top sheet, and pillowcase then place them inside the extra pillowcase. Fold the excess pillowcase fabric under. Stack and store sheet sets according to size and season (if you have seasonal prints or flannel sheets). Be sure to use labels or small signs to designate and mark each shelf.

Blankets

Separate blankets into categories such as throws and quilts, and separate them by size. If you have seasonal blankets such as Christmas quilts or spring throws, separate those. You may also prefer to separate and organize your blankets by color. If so, separate the blankets into color categories for storing. Store your blankets in larger storage boxes on the floor of the linen closet since they will be heavier.

Towels

Towels can become a bit troublesome to keep organized since you will probably use these more than any other linens. It will be your choice whether you want to store your towels in boxes or just leave them out on shelves. If you have matching sets, place those together. Store your towels at the front of the linen closet, at eye level since you will be using them more frequently. Depending upon the size of the shelves in your linen closet, you may want to grab a few small decorative laundry baskets from a dollar store to organize your towels. When you are out of towels in a bathroom, you can grab a small laundry basket from the linen closet to refill the stock in the bathroom.

Tablecloths

Separate your tablecloths according to season or occasion. If you only have a few seasonal tablecloths, you can store them together. You can use plastic or decorative storage boxes to keep the tablecloths dust free. General use tablecloths can be organized by color and size.

Getting your linen closet organized and in order can help you keep your home running smoothly. When that linen closet is organized, you and your family can easily find the linens you need without spending too much time looking.
