How to Organize Your Movie Collection

If you have a large movie collection, you will need to figure out a way to keep it organized. After all, when you want to watch something, you want to be able to find it without a big hassle. Here’s a couple of ideas to help you get your movies organized and ready for you to watch when you are ready.

Organize by Genre or Title

When it comes to getting those movies organized, two of the best and easiest methods are to put them in order by genre or by title. Sorting alphabetically is fairly simple, but combining the two methods to organize your movies first by genre, then by title, makes it much easier to find what you need and keep them in order.

Sort Boxed Collections First

If you have any boxed sets of movies or television shows, start with those. Keeping those separate from individual DVDs will help you keep things better organized as the boxed sets are usually larger in size and can cause visual disproportion as well as uneven rows when placed next to individual DVDs.

Separate Genres

Next, separate your movies by genre. Most people may have assorted genres such as kids movies, horror movies, historical movies, dramas, comedies, documentaries or reality, chick flicks, action movies, foreign films, and television shows. You may have all of those and a few more or not quite so many.

Figure out which genres you have and create a stack for each one. Use an index card to mark each stack so you can stay on track as you are sorting.

Use Shelves or Storage Boxes

Do you wish to keep your movies out on shelves for easy access, or do you want to put them away in storage boxes to keep them dust-free? Make your decision then start putting your movies in place.

If you use shelves, start with boxed sets and put them in alphabetical order on the top shelf. Be sure to label the shelf. If you use storage boxes, label each box according to genre. Since you may not be able to fit every DVD into one box, you may wish to label the boxes according to alphabetical titles (for example, A-L and M-Z).

Alphabetize Genres and Titles

Next, alphabetize the genres (action, chick flicks, comedies, documentaries, dramas, foreign, historical, horror, kids, television, etc.). Use adhesive labels to label each shelf with the genre as you fill it up. Alphabetize each title in each genre as you go.

Once you have your movies organized, it will be a continuing job to keep it that way. Get everyone in the family on board with keep the movie collection neat and orderly and show the kids how to keep the titles sorted and alphabetized. The next time you need a movie, this system will let you find it without headache or hassle.
