DIY Lemon Lime Bath Bombs

Do you love fizzy bath bombs, but hate paying an arm and a leg for them? You can easily make your own custom ones at home with just a few ingredients, and even better, with all-natural ingredients and essential oils so that you know only good things, instead of perfumes, are going into them.

This recipe uses 2 essential oils in lemon and lime. If you can find the cute slice-shaped molds, it makes for a great display and cute gift item for someone as well. Use any combination of citrus oils, too, along with the same base ingredients.

This recipe made one whole tray of the ice cubed size molds, which filled an entire mason jar full. You can use a larger mold and will still get three or four bath bombs out of the same amount.

Lemon Lime Bath Bombs Ingredients:

  • Silicone molds
  • 1/2 cup citric acid – this can be found at your local natural grocery store or you can order it online.
  • Witch Hazel – a small amount in a spray bottle
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 20 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 15 drops of lime essential oil
  • Food coloring – this is optional if you want them colored
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Glass Jar or container for storage

DIY Lemon Lime Homemade Bath Bombs Instructions:

  1. Measure out the citric acid and place in a glass mixing bowl. Citric acid can have a strong smell, so make these in a well ventilated room.
  2. Add in the baking soda. Use a whisk to remove any lumps and mix together well.
  3. Slowly add in one of the essential oils and mix well with the whisk. Add in the other essential oil and whisk again to get rid of any clumping.
  4. If you are going to add color to your bath bombs, go ahead and add a few drops of food coloring. Three to four drops is good, but if you want them a brighter color, do closer to 6. Mix in the color and be sure to get any large lumps of color broken down so it spreads evenly throughout the whole mix.
  5. Put on the rubber gloves. With one hand, spray the mixture with the witch hazel, and then mix it with the other hand. Take your time and spray just the top to make it damp. You can always spray more with hazel if you need to. The mixture will need to be damp throughout, but not super wet. The mixture will get cold. The best way to know if the mixture is the right consistency is to get a ball of it in the palm of your hand and see if it sticks together without falling apart or being powdery. If it does, you are ready to press it into the molds.
  6. Begin to press the mixture into the molds. Put a handful in, press down to fill the mold completely and to pack down the mixture. Scrape any extra off the top so it’s flat across the top of the mold.
  7. Set the molds on the counter for about 15 to 20 minutes to dry some and harden. Then, flip them over carefully onto a plate and let them dry another 10 or 15 minutes. Now, you should be able to push them out of the molds. Carefully push on the middle of the mold and pull the mold up with the other hand at the same time. When they are ready, they will come out easily.
  8. Let the bath bombs sit on the plate, in the sun if possible, for at least thirty minutes to dry out entirely. If you want to test them, feel the center top and bottom, if it still feels cold or damp, let them dry longer.
  9. Store your DIY Lemon Lime Bath Bombs in a cute glass jar. When you are ready to use them, just place one in your bath water and enjoy!
