How to Organize a Walk In Closet

If you have a walk in closet with plenty of room for everything, it might seem to be a snap to keep it all organized. Unfortunately, when you have more space, you tend to fill it up. Keeping a walk in closet in order takes a little effort and organization to start, but it’s worth it. Check out these tips to help you pull it all together.

Use Storage Drawers

If you have clothing items, accessories, and other things that you store in your closet but don’t hang up, make use of storage drawers to keep them organized. You can easily pick up plastic storage drawer sets at local discount stores and home centers that will fit nicely into a walk in closet. Wooden dressers can also be used for easy storage that is also decorative.

Use these drawers to keep socks, underwear, seasonal items, scarves, lingerie and other things in order. If you use plastic drawers, be sure to put labels on the drawers so you don’t spend too much time rifling through various drawers looking for specific items.

Use Shoeboxes

Plastic shoeboxes can also be great for keeping your stuff organized. If you don’t want to keep your shoes on a shoe rack or in a hanging shoe bag, place each pair in a plastic shoebox then label the box. These boxes stack neatly and can keep your shoes (or other items) dust free and ready to go.

Hang Clothing by Colors

One easy way to sort clothing on hangers is to separate items by color. Hang like colors together so you can easily find what you are looking for when you need it. This method also helps you put items away quickly and easily since every item will have a specific place.

Turn Hangers Backwards

When you organize your closet, put your hangers on the closet bars backwards. This will help you declutter later on. As you wear something, you will be able to turn the hanger and put it back on correctly when you hang it back up. When it’s time to clear out your closet, you can easily see which clothing items haven’t been worn.

Hang Up As Much As Possible

To keep things organized and in order, hang up as much as you possibly can in your walk in closet. Get things up and off the floor. Slip belts over hangers or add hooks and racks to spots on the walls. Everything that can be hung up, should be hung up.

Once you get your walk in closet organized, you will need to tidy up now and again to keep it that way. Spend a little time straightening up here and there and you will be able to keep your closet in order — and you will find what you need without a hassle.
