Super Easy Bunless Keto Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

When you eat the Keto way, food doesn’t have to be boring or without flavor.  It can be easy and this recipe is proof!  This super easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak recipe is one I make often!  Now, real Philly Cheesesteak recipes use very thinly sliced Ribeye but I tend to use whatever steak or beef I have on hand for that week.

Now, normally I don’t eat the Philly Cheesesteak on a bun.  Not while doing Keto anyway.  I almost always serve it warm over a big plate of crisp cold lettuce.  The combination of hot and cold together along with the added crunch from the lettuce makes this meal a definite winner!  This is exactly how I order it when I’m out and about too.  Most restaurants will be happy to serve it over lettuce with no problems whatsoever.  In fact, I was in the mall yesterday and they did exactly that for me with no issues.  I tend to order the smallest sandwich but minus the bread.  It’s always very filling because I tend to have more lettuce than meat.

Super Easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak Recipe Ingredients

  • Thinly sliced ribeye steak (or other beef you want to use)
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Optional toppings included:  Mushrooms, onions or green peppers also sliced thinly
  • Provolone Cheese Slices

Super Easy Keto Philly Cheesesteak Recipe Instructions

  • Cut the ribeye thin.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Start with adding olive oil or butter to the frying pan and getting it nice and hot before you start.
  • Next, add the sliced veggies you want on your sandwich first because these will take the longest to cook.
  • After the veggies are about halfway cooked, add the thinly sliced raw meat to the skillet.
  • Fry the steak over medium heat just enough for it to brown on all sides.
  • Once the meat has brown, add a slice or two of provolone (or your favorite cheese) on top of the hot steak while it’s in the skillet.  Turn the burner off.
  • Add chopped lettuce to a plate and place the warm cheesesteak over the top of the lettuce.

Enjoy!

Here are some of the top Cheesesteak questions I always get asked:

What Type of Meat is Used for Cheesesteak?

It is typical to use Ribeye for the cheesesteak.  However, you can purchase Steak-Umms at the store.  Steak-Umms is found in the frozen section of most grocery stores.  It’s thinly sliced frozen meat that is already to go.  I usually don’t even have to defrost Steak-Umms because it’s so easy and fast to cook.  It’s a great idea to keep some in your freezer for a super fast meal.

How to Slice Meat for Cheesesteak?

If you want to slice a steak yourself there are a few tricks you need to know to slice it super thin.  First, wrap your steak in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for approximately 20 to 30 minutes.  This will freeze the steak just enough for you to cut it super thin.  The meat will be hard enough to have control over the cut size but not too hard to be able to cut it.  Be sure to cut against the grain when slicing it.  You can also ask your butcher to cut it for you too.  They usually offer this service if you request it.

How to Season Cheesesteak Meat?

Some people like to use Worschester sauce but honestly, salt and pepper is enough.

What to Serve with Cheesesteak while doing the Keto diet?

Serve it over a bed or cauli-rice, cauli-mash, roasted radishes or a bed of lettuce.  Or each it without the bun plain.  That works too!

Cheesesteak:  What Kind of Cheese Do You Use?

Provolone is the most popular choice but use your favorite cheese.  I would say pepperjack is my next favorite because of the flavor it adds to the cheesesteak.

Where to Buy Cheesesteak Meat?

You can buy the precut cheesesteak meat in the freezer section (the product is called Steak-Umms) or you can cut your own steak in the thin slices.
