5 Tips to Organize Your Gift Closet

Do you have a gift closet? Oh you know how it is: We all keep some little gifts on hand for that “just in case” occasion that arises unexpectedly. Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, a holiday, or some other special occasion that you want to give a gift for, keeping a few items on hand is a handy way to save time and even some money (when you find great sales!). Check out these tips for keeping that gift closet organized and in order.

Sort by Occasion

Every gift is not necessarily suitable for every occasion. You probably have a few gifts that are Christmas gifts while others may be for any occasion. Sort out your gifts and separate them by occasion. Choose specific categories like birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, get well gifts, just because gifts, and the like.

Separate Adult Gifts from Kid Gifts

If you don’t want to separate the gifts by occasion, separate them by age. Separate the adult gifts from the gifts you have put back for kids. You can even break them down further by age groups. After all, that Transformer toy that is great for an eight-year-old won’t be so great for a six-month-old.

Separate by Gender

You may wish to take your sorting a step farther by separating gifts by gender. You may wish to have a pile for male gifts, a pile for female gifts, and a pile that is unisex gifts.

Use Decorative Boxes

What are you going to put all of those gifts in? If you want to keep them away from prying eyes, you will need to store them in your gift closet inside boxes that will keep them out of sight. Be sure to label each box so you know what’s inside. Since you don’t want family members to see the gifts you have put back (in case you need to use any for them), you don’t want the labels to reflect exactly what’s stored inside the boxes. Be generic with your labeling. Write things like “Male Christmas Gifts” or “Little Girl Birthday Gifts” on the boxes. If you are afraid that even generic labels like that might entice young snoops, number each box then create an inventory list for each number.

Make an Inventory List

You will want to create a master inventory list for your own use. Create a list of every item you have in your gift closet. This will help keep you on track so you won’t go out and buy something you already have or when you need some ideas for a quick gift. The inventory list will keep you from needing to rummage through all of the boxes to figure out what to give when you need a quick gift.

Get your gift closet organized so you can easily “shop” when you need to. Keeping everything in order means you won’t overlook anything or buy something you already have.
